About Communication

What I'm hoping to learn from this podcast project is some new vocabulary, a better understanding of how Japanese grammar works in conversation (beyond what we've studied in textbooks), and also what Japanese university life is like (and how it compares to student life at Columbia). What I'm really looking forward to is coming up with the script and actually putting what I think I've learned to the test.

As far as what communication means to me... to me, communication means the coherent and accessible exchange of ideas. Communication isn't just putting information forward, it's kind of like ensuring its comprehension as well. Like if someone is lost, and I give them directions--if they don't actually understand any of the directions I've given them, we haven't really communicated at all, I've just spoken at them. I guess communication is the difference between talking at a person and talking with them.

本やえいがが好きですが、ネイルポリッシュとてもが好きですよ。ネイルポリッシュをあつめることできますから、とくさんネイルポリッシュがあります。なまえのいろはおもしろくて、きれいですから、ネイルポリッシュが好きです。I'd love to be the person who gets to name all of these colors! ルームメイトもネイルポリッシュが好きです。ルームメイトは小さいファイルキャビネットがあります。ファイルキャビネットの中にとくさんネイルポリッシュがあります！

ふゆ休みに何をしましたか？

十二月十九日にわたしはかぞくのうちへかえりました。(My parents didn't know when I'd be coming home--it was a big surprise when I showed up on their doorstep that night!) わたしたちはクリスマスをいわいました。クリスマスに大きい朝ごはんをたべて、たくさんプレゼントをあげて、とくさんプレゼントをもらいました。それから、おじとおばのうちへいって、晩ごはんをたべました。
十二月三十日にわたしはあまりげんきじゃありませんでした。ともだちはパーテイーへいって、シャンパンをのみました。わたしはねつがありましたから、びょういんへ行きました。シャンパンをのみませんでした。。。not a very happy new year's eve!
それから、たくさんえいがをみて、本をよんで、かぞくとはなしました。My little brother spent some time trying to teach me how to play go, but I'm terrible at it--I'm way too impatient and aggressive (but I can still beat him at chess!).

ふゆ休みに青いしらがぞめでかみをそめました。でも、今かみはちょっとみどりです。すきですよ！でも、母と父はわたしのかみがすきじゃありません。
